Situated by the East China Sea and next to Shanghai and Hangzhou, Ningbo is the economic center of the southern Yangtze River Delta, with a long historical and cultural record. It is Zhejiang Province’s second largest city, a separately planned city in economic management, and is widely known as the hometown for overseas Chinese. The city has 11 counties and districts with a total area of 9,365 square kilometers, a population of 5.5 million. It is also home to the 7000-year-old “Hemudu Culture” and the famous cultural ruins such as the Tianyi Pavilion. As one of the earliest cities opened up to the outside world, Ningbo has had a booming economy for the past two decades. The cargo throughput of Ningbo Port in 2006 was over 300 million tons, ranking 2nd in China and 4th in the world. The container throughput reached 706.75 million TEU, ranking 4th in China and the 13th in the world. The city’s foreign trade volume reached US$42.2 billion in 2006.
