ADVANTAGES/SPECIAL FEATURES ABOUT JOE NSIAH’S DESIGN OVER OTHER INCINERATORS.


o A well designed filter unit has been incorporated. The function is to filter or clean the smoke that will be emitted, all carbon monoxide and other toxic compounds are removed. This is an environmental issue. This filter unit is not found in any locally designed incinerator.

o Our chimney heights conform to international standards. This is also an important environmental issue. Other locally designed incinerators have short chimneys and contribute to environmental pollution.

o A Chinese hat is constructed on top of the chimney. This is an important environmental Area of concern.

o A well-designed fire grates for primary and secondary air inlets, and for stiochiometric firing condition which is necessary.


o Angle-shaped brick for constructing the upper part of doors shutters to support the wall above them. This construction is ideal.

o Metal doors and shutters are fabricated at the mechanical Engineering Department of KNUST. These metal doors/gates also act as dampers and air inflow can be regulated.

o The fire grates design is also special. The main functions of fire grates in thermal plants are:

a. To support the fuel- in this case, act as bed for the refuse to burn
b. To allow much needed primary air to enter easily from beneath.
c. To allow ashes and small embers to drop down easily, and to withstand warpage. In some construction or designs, ashes as well as some of the small size refuse drop down remain unburned, making removal of ashes more difficult and also negating the important task of an incinerator-completely burning all combustible waste. The gaps between the fire grates have been specially calculated to let nothing, but ashes to drop.

o The gaps in-between the down part of the fire grates and floor of the ash chute (ash collecting area), have been properly calculated. This is important for the following purposes:
a. For easy removal of ashes.
b. When ashes remov
